The Role of Personality Components on Self-Efficacy in Medical Students

Background and Aim: Self-efficacy is individual s’ expectations and assumptions in a position or reaching
a worthy decision through individually activities and it can’t be realized unless having a normal personality.
The aim of this study was to investigate the role of components of personality on students’ self-efficacy
who were in fourth academic year at Tehran University of Medical Sciences and were on the beginning the
hospital internship.
Method: the study method was of descriptive–correlation type. The sample of the study consisted of 80
students from Tehran University of Medical Sciences who were selected based on random sampling. For
data collection the HEXACO personality inventory and Sherer & Maddux’s questionnaire of self-efficacy were
applied.
Results: All of predictor variables had a significant effect on self-efficacy. Also, extraversion and
conscientiousness were positive and significant predictors. In addition, all of predictor variables predicted
and explained 29% of variations in self-efficacy.
Conclusion: Attention to social skills training to deal more effectively with patients and setting up
workshops can be considered as suitable growth factors for social aspects of medical students skills.
