Introduction: Catheterization is a suitable solution in necessary cases; however, if its indication is not considered properly, it can lead to irreparable complications for the patient. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of catheterization workshop training on the knowledge and attitude of medical students and clinical residents.
Methods: The present study was an observational-analytical study in Imam Reza hospital, AJA University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran in 2019-2020. Sampling method was simple and the study participants were 64 clinical residents and 51 medical students (pediatrics, internist and surgery). First, a lesson plan on catheterization was prepared. In addition, real patients who had been admitted to the ward and catheterization were used for the study. Finally, multiple choice questionnaire prepared as pre-test and post-test. A self-design questionnaire was prepared to evaluate the opinions and views of learners. The results were analyzed by t-test and chi-square statistical tests using SPSS software version22.
Results: The pre and post test results were useful in the majority of residents and they increased their awareness and knowledge. Only 38% of the participants had enough information about academic catheterization. 86% of them had decisions–making problems about catheterization and 52.5% of learners did not have enough scientific information to solve the complications of catheterization. After training, participants believed that 66.5% of patients who had catheterization did not need it at all. 90% of the learners declare that evidence base training is essential and they asked to participate in these classes.
Conclusion: The catheterization program is useful for students and clinical residents and it has added to their scientific information. It is recommended that educational authorities take steps toward holding periodic workshops.
