Academic culture and its changes in Iran

Amis: One of the preconditions for the civilization is science production, which requires cultural, social
and normative structures. One of the most important cultural tools is academic culture. Academic culture is
different from the social, organizational and national culture. This research aimed to investigate the academic
culture in Iran and the reasons for its changes.
Methods: based on the findings of previous studies in connection with academic culture, In this research
we evaluated the academic culture in Iran and its changes during the past 15 years (2000-2015) through
the mix method (Quantitative including descriptive and Survey Qualitative including self- lived, exploration).
Study population was official and visiting faculty members of management, humanities and technical college
of, Islamic Azad university (North Tehran, Central Tehran and Yadegare Imam Khomeini branches), Tehran
and Allameh Tabataba’i Universities and Farabi College . Data were collected through questionnaires and
interviews. quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS version 21.
Results: The results of research showed that apart from the influence of cultural, economical, social and
political Conditions on, academic culture in Iran it is also affected by diverse cultural developments in Iranian
society, unplanned spread of universities in response to the increasing educational demands, populism in
universities, granting various scholarships . Currently the dominant culture in Iranian university culture is
Hipponic.
Discussion: According to the results of this research, the education and research environment of the
studies Iranian universities is neither persuasive nor aspirant environment for learning, training and research.
Uninformed Imitation and lack of questioning system, limit the scientific development and transfer of skills to
the students. Our study showed that academic culture in Iran, is changing with a steep slope. This Changes
are not promising scientific excellence, instead in some ways violates academic dignity and hinders the
Country’s scientific development. Scientific position and academic situation looks critical, especially in the
humanities field. which affect the knowledge creation, especially in the humanities field.
